Touchdown!

Hey everyone,

I hope everyone is keeping warm and cozy in this freezing weather! This video was taken this past week. He's getting bigger and bigger! That belly!

I started to think of things I would want myself to remember about the journey Jim and I have had up to this point. I thought about making a list of things I might have tried differently though, keeping my personality in mind, I may not have tried these anyway.. but here are the things I thought of...

1. I would have made more of my own baby food when James was 6 months old and just get crazy with it.
2. I would have tried to pump sooner so it would help my production of milk later (sorry if that is TMI.. but it's true).. Not that this would have for sure made a difference but I'd like to try.
3. I would have tried to deliver without C-section. Now, I don't hate that this was the way it happened. It wasn't that bad but I'm really curious what it's like to go the other route.
4. I would have taken certain advice as a grain of salt. I think I put too much pressure on myself for things to be "just so".

On the heel of these thoughts, though, there are many many more things I am so grateful for and love about the past year.

1. I love my play group way more than I think they even know
2. I LOVE that I attempted a blog and that I am still writing in it. What a great way to remember how this journey was/is. I can't even remember what I had for lunch today so it's good I'm writing this stuff down and family and friends can see this.
3. I love mothers day out. If I didn't have the financial means for it, I think I would have to find a friend where we would swap days and give each other free days because, some days, that is a freedom much needed.
4. sleep schedule - I love that I got James on a great sleep schedule early on. This is probably more James than me but I feel like I worked hard on getting him in the bed for naps and bedtime like the book "Baby Whisperer" said and it worked well for us. Probably not for everyone, but for me, it helped immensely.
5. I love our pediatrician
6. I love the McWane Science center

possibly more to add to these lists coming soon

One Year Appointment

I just wanted to jot this down so I can remember.. We had our one year doctor's appointment with Dr. McAwesome McCain. James weighed in at 23 pounds 14 ounces. He was 95% for height and 75% for weight. He got his Flu, Chickenpox, and Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. The chickenpox one was "more superficial" per the nurse so it may get a little red in his left thigh. James was a stud. He only cried for about 5 seconds and then looked around like "that hurt my feelings".. then he was over it.

I have to mention this because it is pretty important. Romo is out with a clavicle fracture . We are devastated. It just happens to be that we are going to the game this weekend. Might I add that the last game we went to, he was out with a pinkie injury in his passing hand. Will we ever get to see the boy play live? Jim is in need of counseling.. Please be thinking of him. I should also add that the cowboys have lost every game but one so far. Really? A team this "talented" per so many "experts".. and we are big fat losers.. New coaches! This is an outrage!

Onto college news - GO BULLDOGS. I feel the need to say this now before the Kentucky game in case we play like we did against UAB... We have only lost two games!! And we lost to the number 1 and the number 12 team respectively (BCS). Get this.. we are ranked for the first time since 2001! Can I get a whoop whoop, people!! AND we have won 5 games in a row which is the first time since 1999 (when we were only freshmen). Do you feel smarter now? You should. I am.

Well, the blog wouldn't be a blog if I didn't leave a photo, right? The only thing is, I haven't uploaded since his birthday so I'm going to pick a favorite from lately. If you have facebook, you probably have seen these already

Looking forward to seeing you all very soon!!

James turned one today!!

Happy Birthday, Buddy!

In all of my life, I have never felt the emotions I have in the past two and a half years. Getting married to a wonderful man and having an amazing baby boy has made me feel emotions that I didn't know existed. I love you two so much. Happy first birthday! This past year was full of fun, wasn't it? It's weird to think that you won't remember it at all when you are older but you will carry every bit of it with you. You learned how to eat, how to laugh and smile, how to stand on your own and balancing, and way more than I even realize. I am so excited for the years ahead of us but I thought I would take a look back at the year we've spent together...

Pre birth!! You were a cute little nugget even before you were born. "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart" Jeremiah 1:5

Your birthday last year! Everyone was so enamored by you and your presence! Unbelievable emotions! "This is the day that the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it!" Psalm 118:25

October! If you thought we would let a single Halloween go by without dressing you up, you were poorly mistaken! You made me laugh. We had zero trick or treaters (they all trick or treat on Mayfair around the corner) but we had fun with you anyway. All of my friends were making dinners and coming to visit. This was a fun stage. "This is what the Lord says - Your Redeemer, the Holy one of Israel: 'I am the Lord your God who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go'" - Isaiah 48:17

November! What a whirl. Mama wasn't sleeping much, emotional as I can be.. Daddy was working a lot. B and Doc came through town every chance they got. Aunt Ellen came and cheered on the Auburn tigers with you in her arms. Aunt Lindsey and Grandaddy Galbraith came to town and played frisbee in the front yard. It was a blur. When I see these photos, I can't imagine you this little.. well, maybe just a little part of me can..

Our little Santa Clause! We had so much fill this season! Christmas as wonderful with being surrounded by family and friends. I'll never forget you in this costume. I had bought it at a consignment sale and we sure did use it. We did a lot of travel, too, and you did so great in the car. We drove all the way to Dallas (in the early part of Jan.). The holiday was celebrated in style. "For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" Isaiah 9:6

January brought on the new year and you were still so small (although, knocking out the growth charts at the doctor's office). My son, you do love to eat! We had a great January. Jim and I had fun putting you in all of the toys we had such as the play mat you are on this picture, the bumbo (once you got the head control), the baby einstein entertainment center.. You were busy learning.. trying to focus.. and using that voice. I have a feeling you won't be a shy little boy.

February was awesome. I was still learning a lot but you started to sleep a lot better too. I was excited that you slept through all of the contruction going on downstairs. We got that basement built for you, big buddy!.. well, and our guests :)

March. This is a photo of you starting to hold on to things to stand up! Use those legs, boy! You sure knew how in the womb :) It snowed in March. In fact, it snowed three of four times in 2010 and we stayed inside for most of it! Sooo crazy.

AAAhhh April. This photo may have even been late March but I always think of Easter as in April so I put this photo because it is so funny. This bunny looks drugged. Jim and I met up with Aidan and Charlene to get our photo with the bunny wearing way too much eye makeup for my taste... Still don't understand the planning of that costume.

May.. Okay, I admit that I entered this one photo in some contest.. I think it was a yobaby contest. Anyhow, I swore to myself I would never do that because my emotions would get way too carried away but I did it anyhow. But I mean, come on... this baby is cute!! And healthy at Dr. McCain's office. Rosy cheeks and a cheery disposition. Little did he know some shots were coming.

June was a fun month. It was time to get out in the sun and play!! (with sunscreen, of course). You had new experiences with water and splashing around. I mean, look at this booty! James, I promise before you get near to any dating age, I will protect these photos :) "I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he consider me faithful, appointing me to his service" 1 Timothy 1:12

July! Getting hotter!! We got out in the sun and spent several days in the park swinging in the bucket swings. I remember taking you to downtown Homewood for the fourth of July and strolling you around. You really loved the ponies at the pony ride.. You love animals.

August. August was when I perfected the barricade and baby proofed the house to perfection. You went from "kinda crawling" to "all over the house and in every cabinet and drawer" almost overnight. The women at the day care at work were calling you "Hurricane James". A name, I think, just might stick.

September.. GOOOOO Bulldogs! We love Dan Mullens!! Doc showed us such a good time in the game box and we had a great time tailgating.

And here we are.. A photo taken today on your first birthday. What a joy! What bliss!! What trouble shall this next year bring?!

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" John 14:27

I Hooted!

Hi guys!

Just a few more photos and videos from the past few days!

James is doing so good. He is walking more and more each day to the point where I think he will be very independently walking in about a week or two. Every day he amazes me. He still is saying "ba-ba" for da-da and loves to say "moooo" when you ask "what does a cow say"? He did have peanut butter for the second time this past week as a tester and had a pretty bad reaction with a rash and welts. I hate it for him but, for now, he has a peanut allergy. We went to Asher Irvine's birthday today. This is the little boy who was born a day before James and whose dad is a resident under Jim. They were in a room right down the hall.

We can't wait for our upcoming Dallas trip to celebrate James' big first birthday!

Much love,

Melissa

Update

Hello!

We just got back from a trip to Las Vegas for a week! James stayed with B and Doc in Jackson while Jim and I headed to the Vegas strip for the ACEP retreat. We had a great time but couldn't stop talking about our son. I think he keeps us entertained even when he's not around.

Well, if you haven't heard yet, I will be an aunt in April (maybe March)! Ellen is 14 weeks pregnant and now gets to start planning her blog template (I hope..). Kristen and Galen are getting married in March too so it will be a very exciting month! I can't believe all of the changes happening. Also, Claire, my best friend from college is pregnant and due April 19th. Baby girl Ridgway hopefully will be here healthy and happy :)

Okay, I got some video today. James is growing so incredibly fast. I know I say that every post but it's true. When Jim and I got home from Vegas, we peered over the crib to look at James and he looked like he grew a foot.. He is so close to walking all over the place by himself... definitely practicing daily. He stands up on his own and can walk one or two steps on his own and can walk when he holds your hand. Man oh man time flies!

Here is some video from today. He loves to dance to music from his toys. One of these videos demonstrates how he does his twist and shake.

We hope you are enjoying awesome fall weather!!

Much Love,

Melissa, Jim and James
Abby and Reagan too!

10 1/2 Months

Hello everyone!

We have been busy busy these past two weeks! James is learning more and more and on, what seems, a much faster pase than it has been. Things here have been good. Last week, we went to the beach with the Shelton side of the family (minus the Thomas duo). James ate Spagetti for the first time and we all had a blast. He also got to ride the merry go round with Doc which was an adventure.

This past week was crazy with Mothers-Day-Out starting and with the MSU/Auburn game in Starkville. James did an awesome job, though he wouldn't fall asleep. I'm not sure I would be able to sleep if there were cowbells ringing in my ear. Oh, and he LOVED the cowbell! We just might have to get him a cowbell soon so he can ring it.

Mothers Day Out is awesome and I have loved having some time to myself around the house and getting errunds run. Well, without further ado, here are some video and photos from the past few weeks. We love you all and hope to see you soon!

Doc and I go ring some cowbells together!

I want that cookie!

First time with Spagetti

I know this is a random shot but I took it so I was proud :)

Look at me, mama!

I thought this picture was priceless. Something about it...

10 Months old

Hi everyone!

I apologize if you have been checking this blog and there have been no updates! Tonight is going to be a long one with lots of pictures. The last two weeks have been a little busy. James and I went to Orange Beach with the Maxwells from Tuesday until Friday of this week, so I've been out of town. I have to admit, that I got in a rut with getting in touch with a lot of people a week before this one and was busy with housework.
This past weekend, my dear friend, Michelle Macdonald, spent the night both Friday and Saturday night. We watched movies in our jammies like 8 year olds and ate brownies. Michelle works for Campus Crusade for Christ and is moving to New York (Big Girl!) on September 9th! I'm so proud of her and the work she does. B and Doc were able to stop by on Sunday as well which was fun. B is coming tomorrow as well so she can keep James while I work on 5SE on Monday. She has been so very helpful! Thank you, mama!
People often ask me if I'm still working. I am working as a nurse on an adolescent unit at the Children's hospital here in Birmingham. The job is very rewarding and full of challenges that I enjoy. I finished my masters this past December (09) for Nurse Practitioner. I was torn on the decision not to take the certification test (and truth be told, still am) because I love medicine and spent time and money on this masters. However, right now in life, I don't feel right about taking a job as an NP and don't see myself doing it anytime soon. Congrats, though, to my good friends who did finish (or are close to finishing) on reaching that goal and seeking it forward. I know, especially if you were in my study group, you are the most talented and brilliant people who really love the job! Anyone who is your patient will be blessed by it, I know!
Orange Beach was a blast! We left on Tuesday and got to play in the pool and, most of all, I enjoyed hanging out with the whole Maxwell clan! What a blessing to have them in our lives. If we ever move to Jackson, we will try to make them neighbors or close to it.
James is doing well. He had a low-grade fever tonight (100.6R) with a runny nose. He is also teething. He has two bottom teeth (as you can see from the photos) and the Canine teeth are starting to protrude. He is waving "Hi" and "bye-bye". He loves to dance. He loves his dada! When we got home from our trip yesterday, he smiled so big and laughed and laughed once he was in his dad's arms. Such a nugget! He is taking two one to two-hour naps a day and sleeping 12-13 hours at night. This is the nice stage where a lot of mamas start thinking.. "hey, i could do two, right?" I think that's why you see SO many kids about 18-24 months apart. SO many. Anyway, I'll shut it off here so I can post some pictures. Let me know you are here if you are! Leave me a message :)

I really try not to do too much TV but it was on this day.

We got to play with Lily Grubbs! She is so precious and we are
excited that they are our neighbors!!

My sippy cup!

Cute Cute!
Heart-melting goodness.

This is for you, Aunt Lindsey!

Today, Grandaddy Galbraith came into town and we have been having a good time so far. I thought I would share some photos and videos taken for all of you but, especially Aunt Lindsey! We can't wait to get to Dallas to see her and Memi and have a first birthday.

This is so fun!

Wahoo!

Thank you, Lindsey, for introducing us to this wonderful dish!

My birthday gifts..uhh Devine! Can't wait to cook more, too!

Tomorrow, the boys are going to play golf while I go sell JR League cookbooks at Belks. We have a babysitter for the first time. Exciting, right? It's crazy hot here in Alabama. Our poor air conditioners are killing themselves just to not see Jim sweat. That's a big feat. Last night, our electricity went out (go figure, Homewood) and was off from 7p until 3a. Mama and baby were H-O-T. Luckily, I had some battery operated fans I was able to put on James and he really didn't seem to be too bothered. I, on the other hand, did not get much sleep and had to go pretty tired all day therefore, goodnight!! Maybe I'll post again tomorrow.

Our new tricks: James is waving "hello" and "goodbye" to pretty much everybody including his reflection. Rather, I should say, ESPECIALLY his reflection. He is soooo close to walking it's scary. He has abandoned trying to say "mama" and "dada" for now but I'm still working on it. He won't sign yet. He is my super rockstar and I am so totally in love.. so is Jim :)

Goodnight!

Melissa and the Galbraith gang
